Trainer profile Ellen Schenk
I offer comprehensive training for scientists and research managers and administrators, drawing on my extensive experience and leadership roles in prominent networks such as the COST Targeted Network BESTPRAC and the European Association for Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA). I have been involved as a trainer in the EARMA Early Stage Research Administrator Masterclass (ESRAM) since its start. As an independent trainer since 2022, I specialize in training on all aspects of research funding acquisition. My training includes creating competitive proposals, defining impact, developing impact pathways, setting up collaborations, engaging stakeholders, and enhancing soft skills like problem-solving, decision-making, and communication. Training sessions are designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for successful research funding, and are highly rated by trainees from different sectors and backgrounds.
With my background as a researcher and long career in research support, I bring a deep understanding of the working environments and challenges of scientists and research manager and administrators. My training sessions are interactive, allowing ample room for personal use cases and helping trainees take the next step in their ideas, projects and careers. I am flexible, empathetic, and able to adapt to emerging needs, offering solutions to both practical and personal problems. My analytical and creative thinking, combined with a healthy dose of humour, self-reflection, and reality checks, creates a safe and engaging learning environment.

NEW! Research Manager Intensive Training
I have teamed up with a group of research managers from Scandinavia, Italy, and France with solid experience in training researchers and research managers in a range of different situations, including institutions and associations. One is a managing consultancy – Research Lighthouse – and two are working as research managers at respectively Sorbonne Université and Politecnico di Milano. Together, we have launched the Research Manager Intensive Training programme, designed to boost research managers’ professional development and increase their efficiency through four carefully tailored courses that cover the entire career span of a research manager.
Our first course is RMIT-1 New in the RM profession. This course is for research managers with 0 to 2 years of experience and is driven by a unique hackathon that covers the complete research project lifecycle from idea to impact, seen from a research management viewpoint and with a focus on the added value that RM brings to the process. The first edition of RMIT-1 is scheduled on 11-13 June 2025 in Hindås, Sweden. For more information and registration, see my recent Blog and the RMIT-1 website.
Our second course is RMIT-2 Mastering Research Management. This course is tailored to research managers with 2 to 15 years of experience, allowing them to explore their current setting, challenges, possibilities, and solutions in their profession. RMIT-2 addresses the current and future state of research management, connecting deeply with each participant’s own experience. The first edition of RMIT-2 is scheduled on 16-18 June 2025 in Hindås, Sweden. For more information, see the RMIT-2 website.
